T17: Communication and Leadership for Effective HCI Teams

Tuesday, 19 July 2016, 09:00 - 12:30

Lillian Blume (short bio)

University of Toronto, Canada
Ryerson University, Canada

Objectives:

By the end of this tutorial, participants will understand how to have the most productive and organized HCI research, industry, or entrepreneurial teams. They will learn to

  • create an efficient team structure
  • run focused meetings
  • build clarity into meetings
  • ensure team members feel heard, so that they can buy into team decisions
  • hold team members accountable
  • analyze team dysfunctions; and
  • face team conflicts with more confidence

Content and Benefits:

Researchers often struggle with building a strong team. Their group consists of highly skilled and multi-talented individuals. They are enthusiastic, motivated, and full of ideas; but might not know how to brainstorm, listen well, or collaborate with others. Differing workplace cultures might make team members seem unreliable. Leaders might expect certain team behaviour and thus fail to give the group clear guidelines early in the project. This tutorial will help you lead and participate in teams that demonstrate trust, healthy debate/disagreement, commitment, and accountability.

In this tutorial we will

  • Examine our previous and current teamwork experiences
  • Identify the behaviors that create team success and team failure
  • Begin creating a coherent team infrastructure by defining "reliability"
  • Acquire practical tools for leading and being part of a successful team

Target Audience:

Everyone
